Tuesday 7 February 2012 Computer Generated Images: push and pull factors 10:30 – 12:15 / 15:30 - 18:00
Moderator: Frédéric Genin, Architect, ArchMonaco
10:30 - 11:15 Nick Taylor, Co-Director, Squint/Opera A wide range of rendering styles have been introduced since the advent of 3D images, but it is the way in which they are received and interpreted by their target audience that varies the most.
While the creators of these images believed that hyperrealism, realism, dream-like and cartoon-like approaches could help and encourage an audience to understand a project, it is clear that virtual imaging, like many other forms of representation, is currently hampered by a general lack of awareness of the design process.
How can this situation be redressed, so that there can be balanced dialogue between designers and contractors?
What types of graphics will we see and use most over the next few years?
Is there a risk of confusion between special effects as used in the cinema industry and images produced for the architectural sector?
Ultimately, one key issue remains – who should use and benefit from 3D virtual imaging and why should it be used?
RTKL / A Global Digital Process 11:30 – 12:15
Daniel C. White, Vice President, RTKL RTKL was founded in 1946 and has developed into a full-service planning, architecture, and creative services organization. With 12 offices around the globe and an international clientele, the firm has designed some of the world’s foremost architectural spaces. RTKL is organized by areas of expertise rather than by discipline or location so that every project—from healthcare to hospitality, retail to workplace—has the benefit of RTKL’s more than 900 specialized, creative professionals. A culture of collaboration encourages a cross-pollination of ideas and talents that breeds a holistic approach to design innovation. The firm has received hundreds of awards of excellence and is widely published in the design and trade press. RTKL is a wholly owned subsidiary of ARCADIS, an international provider of consulting, project management, and engineering services for infrastructure, the environment, and facilities around the globe.
The session will seek to explore how digital, 2D, 3D and BIM innovations of all kinds are used to accomplish day-to-day tasks.
Using striking examples, the session will provide an insight into the RTKL agency and its 2D/3D digital process, detailing the methodology it uses to manage large-scale projects around the world efficiently and unproblematically, producing the different documents that each project requires, regardless of location.
Introducing a topic that will become increasingly significant in the future:
the close relationship between studying sustainable development – a new idea – and architectural projects 15:30 – 16:15
Ralf Levedag, Architect, Projects Manager, Cabinet Wilmotte & Associés SA Based on the notions of sustainable development and saving energy, the futureStade de Nice saw its design move into areas that were previously unexplored; the technical solutions that were conceived had a major impact on the future architecture of the building.
How was this innovative design process supported by digital imaging and software for producing High Environmental Quality solutions?
Digital mock-ups (BIM) / Feedback and current case studies 16:30 – 18:00
Clay Starr,RTKL, BIM Director Ralf Levedag, Architect, Projects Manager, Cabinet Wilmotte & Associés SA Trino Beltran, R§D Innovation Director, Bouygues Bâtiment M. Le Bret, Ingerop The four speakers for this session are key figures in using digital mock-ups in major architectural projects and have also seen a new method of approaching design and construction phases being introduced.
They are uniquely positioned to explain their findings and experiences, as well as their doubts and expectations as regards I.T. developers.
With examples drawn from large-scale constructions that are currently underway – a brief outline of each being provided – the four speakers will discuss their views, providing an insight into how they approach this new form of expertise.
Wednesday 8 February 2012 Improving town management using 3D 9:30-13:00 & 16:00-18:00
Town management involves comparing complex problems for which an increasing number of digital mock-ups have appeared over the last few years. While a range of subjects have been tackled, however, there has been an accompanying increase in the number of distinct forms of representation, all different from one another. Because of obvious financial and practical reasons, towns and cities are increasingly moving towards specially developed and long-lasting digital mock-ups, based on reliable geo-spatial data, which professional software packages can then promote according to local needs and the services involved. imagina invites all European towns and cities to come and compare views on the issues surrounding, limits of and prospects for the digital towns and cities of tomorrow and methods of managing them that use 3D. It is no longer a case of presenting different projects, but of sharing feedback about how they are actually used and issues pertaining to their longevity and their development.
