Editorial by Laurent Puons - General Manager

In many sectors, including aerospace, the automotive industry, transport, architecture, urbanism and territory management, 3D simulation and visualisation technologies and design solutions have become indispensable.

Such technologies, as well as models that combine real and virtual images, are becoming more widely available, stimulating growth and additional new developments in European industry. The transition towards virtual 3D models allows us to experience products as part of a digital decision-making process that involves sight, sound, touch and, more recently, the ability to contextualise 3D models within immersive worlds.

Technological innovations have brought sectors closer together, bridging gaps between transport and territory planning, for example, as well as the automotive industry and Media & Entertainment.

These developments provide support to all professions, from artistic to industrial; from design to production. Every stage benefits: initial study, stylisation, scientific calculations, modelling physical phenomena in 3D, digital mock-ups, virtual prototyping, validation, multi-strategy simulation of complete complex structures - with or without people - and animated virtual communication, such as mass co-operative and co-creative immersive worlds.

How can these technologies be successfully implemented and performance continually improved?
What are the key issues currently surrounding 3D and virtual technologies? What are the latest innovations in the industry and in which new areas can these be used?

imagina, "The European 3D Simulation and Visualisation Event", is the leading European event for the 3D industry – it will take place in Monaco from 3rd to 5th February 2010.
