3D City & Territory Modeling: Issues and Perspectives

imagina is Europe’s foremost event in urban modelling and 3D landscaping, featuring 3D design solutions, presentations and the Digital City Village.

A brand leader for those working in territory planning, countryside preservation and urban administration (such as territorial engineers, urban designers, landscape designers, architects, land surveyors and geomatics surveyors) seeking to keep abreast of changes in modelling and 3D simulation that affect their profession.

  • Thursday 4 February
  • Friday 5 February

Ravel, Conference area - Translation English / French

10:30 - 11:00 - The 3D urban model: chase with infinitely detailed or tool for analysis of the city and its territory?

> Jean-François Coulais, Geographer, person in charge of research city, territory and landscapes and Christian Père, Lecturer at l’ENSAM Cluny

 11:00 - 11:30 - 3D Digital Towns and Cities: imagina Report 2010

> Hervé Halbout, Consultant, Expert in 3D and Geographic Information Systems, Halbout consulting

Every year, the imagina Report on 3D Digital Towns and Cities examines the most significant 3D modelling projects – from urban and suburban to rural settings – carried out by local authorities, and explores the results they obtain. The Report has become an unmissable opportunity to analyse the range of applications offered by digital mock-ups, as well as the methods and technologies they use.

14:30 - 17:30 - Knowledge sharing: What are the new uses for 3D images?

During the event, each group will have a ten minute slot in which to present their latest 3D mock-up at the ‘What are the new uses for 3D images?’ workshop.
This workshop will feature a professionally recognised jury that will decide on the three best uses of mock-ups in territory planning.
A prize will be awarded at the imagina Awards ceremony.

  • Why do local authorities encourage the development of 3D digital mock-ups?
  • What applications are there for them?
  • What needs do they meet?
  • How much do they cost?
  • Who develops them?
  • Are they reliable and sustainable tools? In what ways have 3D mock-ups become important strategic tools for local authorities?
imagina will attempt to answer these questions – special guests will include mayors and elected officials, politicians and regional technical and general services managers. Our guests will describe their experiences of working with digital mock-ups and will give their assessments on what the future holds for this technology.

9:30 - 13:00 - Developing a 3D Model of an area: which methods should be used? What results will they give?

The diverse range of 3D mock-ups of towns and territories that have been developed in recent years bears witness to the wide variety of possibilities that 3D modelling affords to any local authority seeking to use the technology in their area. With ever-increasing numbers of software publishers and service providers, technological developments continue to progress and the range of applications available grows still wider.

  • How can local authorities put a 3D model of an area in place with a minimum of complications and as few risks as possible?
  • What methods are available to local authorities when they make their choices?
  • How can their priorities and needs be identified?
  • How can they choose between different technologies in an ever-changing industry?
  • How to set out the specifications that best suit one's precise needs?

In an effort to answer these questions, imagina’s special guests will include territorial engineers, Geographic Information Systems representatives and regional technical and general services managers. Our guests will detail their experiences and give their views on the advantages and disadvantages of the different solutions available.

 14:00 - 16:00 - From 3D urban mock-ups to 3D GIS territory modelling

While Geographic Information Systems are now fully developed, their use remains limited to cartography and managing 2D data.
The main indicators of increases in workload for Geographic Information Systems are:

  • Large local authorities’ recent interest in producing 3D digital mock-ups of their area,
  • Strategies used by major IT companies (Google, Microsoft, and so on) with an increasingly significant presence in the geographic information industry
In line with these developments, STAR-APIC began the GIS-based R&D project Terra Magna at the CapDigital and Advancity innovation clusters in 2007. Eleven partners joined STAR-APIC: three small- and medium-sized businesses (BIONATICS, SPACEYES, DRYADE), one large business (THALES), five public laboratories and research establishments (IGN, CSTB, INRETS, ECP, CIRAD) and two institutional test sites (Agglomération de Cergy-Pontoise, IAU-IDF).
The Terra Magna name evokes the notion of an ‘enhanced territory’ as a result of its rôle, an aspect of ‘enhanced reality’, of incorporating information, data and services into an urban database that represents a territory in three dimensions.

After two years’ collaborative work, Star-Apic offers urban data management experts the chance to discover Terra Magna’s first 3D GIS findings.
